EDT Lessons

FORGET THE REST, LEARN FROM THE BEST AND PASS YOUR DRIVING TEST

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) introduced the Essential Driver Training (EDT) on April 4th 2011 with the purpose of teaching fundamental driving skills to learner drivers, and thus improving road safety. If your first learner’s permit was issued before that date then the EDT is not required by law. However, if your permit was issued after April 4th 2011 then you must complete the EDT before taking your driving test.

What does the EDT involve?

There are 12 different modules that make up the EDT, and some people wrongly assume that this means 12 lessons. However, each module may actually require two to three hours of lessons before you get signed off and your logbook is stamped.

The EDT syllabus contains the following 12 modules:

  1. Car controls and safety checks
  2. Correct positioning
  3. Changing direction
  4. Progression management
  5. Correct positioning
  6. Anticipation and reaction
  7. Sharing the road
  8. Driving safely through traffic
  9. Changing direction
  10. Speed management
  11. Driving calmly
  12. Night driving.

In order to reach the standard where each lesson is an individual EDT module you may need 4 to 5 lessons first, ideally two 2 hour lessons in the first week for continuity. However, it may take a more nervous beginner up to 20 lessons to reach the standard required before they can begin working on the EDT syllabus.

EDT sponsor

Only having one hour-long lesson each week will mean that your driving progress will be quite slow, so it is recommended that you practice driving in between lessons with a sponsor. If you don’t have a sponsor to practice with then you will need more lessons with us in order to complete your EDT. However, it’s also a good idea to remember that everyone learns to drive at a different rate, so it’s important not to compare yourself to your peers.

Your sponsor should be an experienced driver; most learners choose a parent or other family member. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your sponsor:

  • They should be an experienced driver, and have held a full licence for a minimum of 2 years
  • They won’t have dual  controls to stop the vehicle in case of danger
  • They may want to teach you in a different way to your instructor i.e. bad habits
  • They may not be fully aware of the rules of the road if they passed a long time ago
  • They may have penalty points or be disqualified from driving
  • They may not have the same level of patience as your driving instructor
  • They may not want to supervise you until you have done 10 lessons with an ADI
  • Their role is to supervise, support, encourage and motivate you as you drive
  • They should continue to help you develop your driving knowledge, and experience
  • They should aid you in becoming a confident and conscientious road user for life

If you’re ready to start learning how to drive and take your EDT with an ADI approved, highly experienced driving instructor, get in touch with Safety First Driving School today to find out more.
